East Alabama Male College, operated by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in Auburn, Alabama, opened in 1859. It became a land-grant college, the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama, in 1872. Its name changed to Alabama Polytechnic Institute in 1899 and to Auburn University in 1960. East Alabama Male College, sponsored by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was chartered in May 1856. Classes opened in 1859 in Auburn, Alabama, but the college closed during the Civil War. Reopening in 1866, the college became a land-grant institution in 1872 and changed its name to Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama.
